Joy in the ‘Kingdom’ as Holstein Friesian breeders launch competition

The official launch of the Kerry Holstein Friesian Breeders’ annual herd competition took place recently at the farm of Maurice & Geraldine Harty, in conjunction with their main sponsor, Dairymaster.

Due to huge interest from both the club and Dairymaster and abiding by the new social distancing norm allows for the competition to go ahead.

This competition aims to promote good production and conformation in Holstein Friesian herd.

Speaking at the launch, chairman of the KHFBC, John Dillon, said, “We are delighted we are able to have the competition this year, it has gone from strength-to-strength in the last few years, so much so, we have two judges this year.”

“This is thanks to Dairymaster who have been sponsoring us since day one and I look forward to continuing this successful working relationship.”

The two categories, spring and autumn, are subdivided into senior, intermediate and junior sections with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in each category.

Prizes include:

  • Best overall cow based on KGs of protein production;
  • Lifetime production cow;
  • Highest conformation herd & production herd;
  • Lowest Somatic Cell Count;
  • Best overall heifer, junior cow, and senior cow;
  • Highest overall EBI herd.

The competition is open to pedigree herds and although later than usual, judging will commence the end of July by judges, Damien Storen and Robert Helen.
