Jobs: Department of Ag hiring ag science graduates

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is hiring graduates in agricultural science to fill vacancies nationwide for the role of assistant agricultural inspector.

The position may be located at headquarters in Dublin, Backweston, Portlaoise, Wexford, or in any of regional offices, laboratories, and testing stations.

Candidates also have the option to express interest in the specific role of assistant agricultural inspector at a Border Control Post.

The successful candidates will be responsible for bringing scientific expertise to bear on the development of the Irish agri-food sector (including the funding of Irish agri-food research programmes) and on the negotiation and enforcement of #EuropeanUnion and national legislation on agriculture.

Duties 

Principal duties of the post depending on the work assigned, and working as part of a team, the successful candidate may be required to perform one or a combination of the following tasks:

  • Bring scientific evidence and other knowledge to bear on policy evaluation and analysis;
  • Exercise appropriate scientific and strategic judgement in complex planning, design, and management of agricultural strategies and programmes for the development of the agri-food sector;
  • Use advanced agricultural science and management skills for the implementation of EU and national legislation and other measures pertaining to the agri-food sector, along with the administration of related schemes, programmes and services;
  • Also, monitor and assess developments in trade and industry and advise on scientific and technical factors influencing trade in the agri-food sector;
  • Research and input into policy and development work, leading to the initiation, implementation or modification of legislation, schemes or policy pertaining to agriculture and the agri-food sector;
  • Participate in negotiations and meetings which are predominantly scientific in nature and pertain to the development and implementation of EU legislation relating to Agriculture and the agri-food sector;
  • Represent the Department at National and International scientific and other fora;
  • Supervision, training, and management of staff.
Requirements

Candidates must, on or before the closing date for applications, hold a primary degree qualification at level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) in agricultural science as well as a full driving licence and a means of transport.

Desirable requirements
  • Post-graduate qualification and/or work experience in an agricultural science area pertinent to the work of the Department and acceptable to the Public Appointments Service;
  • Have a strong awareness of current scientific and other challenges facing Irish agriculture;
  • Capacity to operate in wide and sometimes varied professional scientific capacities;
  • A strong work ethic and ability to prioritise many tasks and deliver in a timely manner;
  • Skills to engage with scientific research teams and appropriately transfer and apply research findings;
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, written and verbal);
  • Ability to work effectively in a team;
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.
Pay

The salary scale for this position, with effect from October 1st, 2020, is as follows:

  • €34,650.00, €37,456.00, €38,383.00, €41,501.00, €44,622.00, €47,743.00, €49,668.00, €51,592.00, €53,522.00, €55,447.00, €57,374.00, €59,303.00, €61,224.00, €63,158.00 NMAX, €65,302.00 LSI1, €67,440.00 LSI2.
