20-25c/kg bonus for Hereford cattle

Irish Hereford Prime has announced an additional bonus for all pre-booked Hereford cattle in spring 2022 and into the early summer months.

Producer group members can avail of a spring/summer 2022 off-season bonus of 20-25c/kg. However, to do so, they must pre-book their Hereford cattle by Friday, February 18th, 2022.

The bonus is available from March 21st, 2022, to May 20th, 2022, in all ABP Group and Kepak Group sites nationwide.

Furthermore, according to the group, qualifying steers and heifers will receive the 20-25c/kg bonus on top of the 12-20c/kg Quality Assurance payment.

Hereford cattle bonus

In a statement on Friday, January 28th, 2022, a spokesperson for Irish Hereford Prime said:

“The re-introduction of an increased off-season bonus by the Hereford producer group for its members is seen as a very positive signal.”

“Following a period of uncertainty at a food-service level due to the effects of the Covid pandemic, the addition of this bonus shows that the demand is strong for Irish Hereford Prime beef from its customers in Ireland and throughout Europe.”

Niall O’Mahony, chair of Irish Hereford Prime, is confident that doubling the bonus until May 20th will help offset higher finishing costs associated with current concentrate prices and the increased cost of replacing silage stocks due to higher fertiliser prices.

“Last year, saw the highest ever number of Hereford qualifying cattle through the producer group. Over 75,000 cattle received a bonus payment for meeting the desired qualifying criteria.”

“Irish Hereford Prime continues to go in the right direction and are starting 2022 on a very positive note.”

He stated that 2022, to date, has been a “very strong” year for the producer group.

He said demand for cattle is “good”, and the group is meeting sustainability targets at farm level with a younger cattle finishing age.

Irish Hereford Prime Farmer of the Year Award 2021

Meanwhile, in related news, Offaly farmer, Clement King, has scooped the Irish Hereford Prime Farmer of the Year Award 2021 title.

The breed was a matter of divine intervention for the farmer, whose son purchased the first Hereford-cross calves on the farm with his Holy Communion money. You can read his story.

Angus cattle bonuses

Earlier this month, Certified Irish Angus announced the “highest-ever off-season bonus”, which members can avail of this spring.

The producer group will offer a bonus of 30c/kg for animals slaughtered between March 14th and May 16th, 2022.

Farmers must pre-book these animals before February 28th, 2022. They can avail of this bonus in addition to the Farm Quality Assurance bonus, which ranges from 12c-20c/kg/animal.
