A YouTuber from Co Longford has been documenting farming in a very different way online.

Phillip Stewart who runs the Farmer Phil channel divides his time between YouTube and daily farming duties.

He farms alongside his father and uncle in Killashee, they run a dairy to calf beef system and an agricultural contracting business.

Education

He did a green cert agriculture course in 2016 which gave him many farming opportunities.

“I’ve been full-time farming since then, you could say I’ve been farming all my life.” He told That’s Farming.

”I’ve been working on the farm for as long as I can remember.

Idea and Youtube videos

The idea happened when he wanted to see if he could make a few pounds by recording himself playing farming simulator.

From there it strengthened to his family farm, farming duties, reviews of Agri products.

“I made a video of the top 10 tractor brands in April which has over 800,000 views.

A video of the wheel busting on the umbilical tractor got over 100,000 views in a week, it now has over 260,000 views.

Challenges

it is challenging to record for the channel while working, especially if others are working with him.

”it can take time to set up shots, spend the time talking about what I’m doing, when I am on my own, it’s grand”

Apart from wearing a mask anytime, he is outside, the pandemic hasn’t impacted on his daily life.

Success does not come straight away when it comes to subscribers it takes time and energy from the user.

“Youtube is vicious you could spend a few years getting 1000 subscribers or you could get them within a month of starting,”, he said.

The key is to be yourself and keep your audience up to date and interested.”You just keep churning out good videos, eventually, it will click.”

Advice

Phil has now reached a massive following ,his advice for anyone starting on their journey is very simple.

”Be yourself and do your own thing, don’t take it too seriously, there are many ups and downs you just kind of buckle in and go with the flow,”

Future

Finally, what does the future hold for this aspiring farmer and video maker.

”We plan to open up the farm shop before Christmas to sell our beef, if it goes well, we plan on expanding it and offering more stuff.”

Concerning the farm “we’re just going to keep going and improve our efficiency “

YouTube,  “I have some exciting stuff planned to come out closer to Christmas, there’s lots of stuff planned for next year all going well if the virus does not get in our way.”
