Sub-zero temperatures and frost to return mid-week

Farming weather update from Met Éireann – Monday, February 22nd, 2021

It will be dry and bright across much of the country today (Monday, February 22nd) with long spells of sunshine, according to Met Éireann.

The national forecaster warned that isolated showers will continue in Connacht and Munster. Meanwhile, it is placing Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Munster, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, and Sligo under a status yellow wind warning from 9 pm tonight until 6 am tomorrow.

“Southerly winds will reach mean wind speeds of 50 to 65km/h, with gusts of 90 to 110km/h, possibly higher on exposed coasts. Where winds are onshore, there is a risk of coastal flooding.”

Rain will be heavy at times, particularly in the south-west, with a risk of localised flooding. It will turn increasingly windy overnight with lows of 5 to 8 degrees.

Tuesday

Wet and windy conditions are set to continue tomorrow as further spells of heavy rain spread northwards across the country. It will be mild with highs of 11 to 13 degrees in strong and gust southerly winds.

Heavy rain will persist early on Tuesday, particularly in the east and south. According to Met Éireann, rain will become gradually light and patchier overnight, with dry spells to develop in the west and north.

It will remain wet in the east and south on Wednesday, as rain is set to continue through much of the day before clearing during the evening.

Dry spells are expected in the north, while the west will see scattered showers, which will persist on Wednesday night. Elsewhere, it will be largely dry with long, clear spells and lows of 3 to 6 degrees.

Thursday

It will be mainly dry and bright on Thursday with sunny spells, scattered showers, and highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees.

Dry conditions will continue on Thursday night with some light, scattered showers set to descend upon the west and north-west. It will become rather cold, with temperatures to drop between -1 to +2 degrees; the national forecaster has warned of a risk of frost.

Friday

It will be mainly dry and bright once again on Friday with long spells and sunshine and isolated showers confined to the north-west of the country.

Weekend

Looking ahead to the weekend, current indications from Met Éireann suggest that it will remain largely dry with sunny spells on both Saturday and Sunday. Scattered showers will impact the west and south-west at times.
