Farmer’s daughter who survived quad bike collision dies suddenly

Teenager, Ellie McDonnell, who last year survived a serious road traffic collision which occurred close to her home, has passed away suddenly.

The tragic death of the 16-year-old showjumper has been met with shock and despair.

In a post on Facebook on Monday, September 14th, a spokesperson for Abbots Cross Presbyterian Church, said: “Some sad news, Ellie McDonnell, the girl who recently had surgery to fit a titanium plate, has died suddenly.”

“Apparently, she had been in great form, but her family found her dead in bed this morning.”

“Please pray for Gods comfort for them as they come to terms with their loss.” the post concluded.

The farmer’s daughter supported National Air Ambulance Week last week, a campaign with the theme of every second counts.

In December 2019, That’s Farming shared Ellie’s survivor story video, which was produced by Air Ambulance NI, which you can view here.

She was riding her quad on her family’s farm when she collided with a jeep driven by her mother at a blind corner on a lane leading to their home.

At the time of the accident, the family were told that Ellie would not have survived a further five minutes without the air ambulance being deployed to the scene.

She sustained broken arms, legs, eye sockets, cheeks and teeth and had severe swelling on her brain.

Air Ambulance NI transported her to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she spent a total of eight weeks, two of which in a medically-induced coma.

She made a “remarkable” recovery and returned to school to complete her GCSEs with a view to pursuing a career in medicine. “I don’t remember much about that day,” she said at the time.

“All I know is that the air ambulance saved my life and without them, I wouldn’t be sitting here today. I would just like to thank Air Ambulance NI for all that they have done for me.”
