6 facts about cows that you never knew

In this article, Michael Dehoyos lists six facts about cows.

Unless you live on a farm, there is not a lot that you know about cows.

Here are some facts about cows that you have probably never heard of before, so why not impress your friends and family with them?

Cow facts

  1. Cows can see almost 360 degrees

In the wild, cows are usually prey animals. As such, they need to be on the lookout for predators at all times. Because of this, they evolved to have near panoramic vision. This allows them to keep an eye on their surroundings, so they will not be caught unaware.

Their only weak spot is right in front of them, as they cannot see very well there. If a cow wants to look at you, they are likely going to turn its head to do so.

  1. Cows do not actually have four stomachs

In school, you may have learned that cows have four different stomachs. This is not exactly true, but their stomachs do work a bit differently from ours.

Instead, they have four separate compartments in their stomachs. These are the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. It is the abomasum that is most comparable to a human stomach.

  1. Cows only have bottom teeth

This sounds very strange, but it is true. A cow will only have a row of bottom teeth and a hard top palette. When they chew grass, they use their long tongues to pull grass into their mouth. Then they use the bottom teeth to grind it against the palette.

  1. Cows are highly social animals

‘It is very rare you will see a cow on its own’ says lifestyle writer Amina Rivers, from 1 Day 2 Write and Write My X. “They are sociable animals, and so they tend to move around in herds.”

In fact, you are only going to see a cow on its own if it is injured, or if it is about to give birth.

They are so social that if they were to be separated, they become stressed. They even enjoy being social with humans, as cows that are named and treated well will produce up to 500 more pints of milk a year.

  1. Cows are a sacred symbol in Hinduism

In Hindu culture, the cow is a sacred symbol of life. As such, in many Hindu majority cultures, cows can roam the streets without fear. They even take part in holiday traditions, too.

The safety of these cows is taken very seriously. “There are usually laws that protect these cows” says writer Shelby Blake, from Brit Student and Next Coursework.

“In some areas, hurting or killing a cow can lead to seven years of prison time.”

  1. A cow cannot see the colour red

You will know of the stereotype of bulls that charge when they see the colour red. The problem is, that is not true. In fact, a cow cannot see the colour red at all.

They are actually colour blind, and so they do not have a retina receptor that can distinguish red hues. If a matador is taunting a bull, the bull will attack because the movement of the cape is convincing it to.

Did you know any of these facts about cows?

They are much more fascinating animals than you would realise. Now you know these things, you will be able to wow your friends and family with these little known cow facts.
