‘Serious’ demand for weanling heifers in Ennis

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, saw a smaller entry of just over 400 lots, including 130 calves, cross the scales.

They noted that “bull weanlings met a good trade and made to €4.48/kg, while heifer weanlings met with serious demand, both at the ringside and online, and these made to €4.35/kg.

Meanwhile, a mixed run of sucklers ranged from €1,040 to €2,260 at Tuesday’s sale.

The spokesperson noted that “some very good, strong” calves were on offer with Hereford-crosses from €165 to €420, while Aberdeen Angus-crosses ranged from €160 to €300 and continental calves peaked at €520.

Last week’s cattle sale

According to a spokesperson at Ennis Mart, a slightly smaller entry of just shy of 600 lots passed through the rings at Tuesday’s (May 23^rd, 2023), cattle sale.

The spokesperson reported that the sale saw an increased numbers of calves, with Hereford-crosses making from €150 to €320 and Aberdeen Angus calves selling from €145 to €365.

Meanwhile, Friesian calves ranged from €120 to €265, and continentals maxed out at €560 for a Charolais heifer calf.

Again, a “strong “entry of suckler stock saw pairs hit €2,360 and in-calf lots made to €1,820.

The spokesperson remarked: “A very strong trade prevailed for bull weanlings, with shippers and farmers active in this ring.”
