Ennis: ‘Poor, light calves are finding it hard to get sold’

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, just shy of 850 lots came under the hammer at its most recent general cattle sale on Tuesday, March 7^th, 2023.

They reported that pairs in the suckler ring made to €3,080, and in-calf lots topped out at €2,620.

The spokesperson commented: “There was a very strong trade for bull weanlings as farmers were very active, and quality heifers were very dear with some super prices achieved.”

“Calves sold well, especially anything with a bit of strength. Again, poor, light calves are finding it hard to get sold.”

Friesian bull ranged from €20 to €60 for the lighter types, with better lots to €70 to €115 and some strong British Friesians topping at €230.

Meanwhile, Hereford-cross calves fetched from €120 to €355, while Aberdeen Angus-cross calves changed hands from €50 to €250, and continentals peaked at €580.

Meanwhile, a small entry of dairy cows went under the hammer from €1,360 to €1,710 at Tuesday’s sale.
