Trade was on-par with the previous week at Tullow Mart’s cattle sale on Friday (June 19th), according to Eric Driver.
The mart manager reported very strong demand around the ring and online for quality stores – especially 350kg-500kg continental bullocks and heifers.
Bullocks
“We saw very strong demand for the forward beef cattle with FR and plainer blacks sold from €400 with the kg and the good smart continentals up to a tops of €950 with the kg but overall, a very strong demand for all cattle in this class.” Driver added.
He reported strong farmer custom for Hereford and Angus entries weighing in excess of 350kgs; these ranged from €190 upwards, while continentals went under the hammer from €2.10-€2.55/kg, with close to €3.00/kg forked out for exceptional lots.
Heifers
“A very lively trade for beef heifers with plenty of butcher and feeder business custom for the in-spec quality assured entries.”
He outlined that farmers were in the market for store heifers, which saw Hereford and Angus-types click from €1.90/kg upwards.
Meanwhile, quality continentals fetched from €2.15-€2.50/kg, while some exceptional-types pushed up closely to the €3.00/kg mark.
Calves
With a small entry of calves on offer, Friesians ranged from €30-€80/kg, while some lighter HE and AA-types climbed from €100-€210.
Cull cows
“Plenty of custom for cull cows and they were possibly dearer by €20-€30/head [from] a fortnight ago.”
‘Out-of-the-parlour’ Friesian cows sold from €100-€350 over the kg, while continentals sold from €300 over for young, feeder-types, while up to €700 was paid for heavier-types/
“Overall, a good clearance today in Tullow with trade fully maintained on last week’s prices which is good to report and a lot of online activity amongst the ring bidding.” Driver concluded.
