Cull cows a steady trade at Elphin

Cull cows met with a steady trade at Elphin Mart on Monday, March 2nd, according to Gerry Connellan.

The mart manager pointed out that the average price achieved in this ring was €1,124; entries ranged from €525 to €1,660 for a 920 kg Charolais cow with a 97% clearance recorded.

In-calf heifers

There was an 86% clearance of in-calf lots, with an average price of €1,115 forked out; they went under the hammer from €830 to €1,370 for a Limousin calving in March.

Weanlings

A J Doherty scooped first-prize for his 500kg entry Charolais, which fetched €1,480 for 500kg. The second-prize-winner in this category came in the form of Mary Regan’s 400kg Charolais, which pushed up to €1,230.

The best Limousin bull weanling weighed 380 kg and climbed to €1,100, while the second-prize-winner, which hit the scales at 410kgs, topped out at €1,210.

Bull weanlings:

“We had a 98% clearance of bull weanlings with prices governed by quality.” the mart manager explained.

  • <300 kg – the average price achieved was €794 with a maximum of €955 for a 300 kg Charolais;
  • 300-400 kg – the average price achieved was €973 with a maximum of €1,240 for a 375 kg Charolais;
  • 400-500 kg – the average price achieved was €1,091 with a maximum of €1,480 for a 500 kg Charolais;
  • >500 kg – the average price achieved was €1,267 with a maximum of €1,570 for a 515 kg Belgian Blue.

Sheep

“94% clearance of lambs with prices steady.” Connellan added.

  • 60 kg – €138.5;
  • 55.5 kg – €134.50;
  • 50 kg – €130;
  • 46 kg – €128;
  • 42.5 kg – €106;
  • 31.5 kg – €85.

“83% clearance of ewes ranged in price from €85-€134. Ewes with lambs at foot made €220.” Connellan concluded.
