Farmers urged to join protest and national march over cost of living

In this article, the leader of RIO, Gerry Loftus, discusses the rising cost of living and planned events – protest and national march.

The Rural Ireland Organisation is to become part of the recently formed Cost of Living Coalition.

The coalition was launched last Friday, May 5th, 2022, outside Leinster House.

RIO has also secured the support of the coalition on the constitutional right of turbary to cut turf to heat our homes and support for local electricity supply.

Support from this coalition is critical for the future of our people in both urban and rural Ireland.

The coalition is made up of Sinn Féin, People Before Profit, The Rural Ireland Organisation, nine other groups and organisations. Other groups are coming on board.

Electricty

Local electricity supply is critical to our future. If it were operational now, it would greatly reduce the need for turf. It would enable our landowners to be receive full compensation to protect Ireland’s bogs.

Everything will be run on electricity in the future. It is not like in the past when the ESB was a semi-state company; we had a certain amount of price control.

Successive governments have handed the Irish people on a plate to corporations coming in here, erecting wind farms charging what they like for electricity.

The latest predictions are that diesel and electricity could double or even treble in price this year because of the EU embargo on oil from Russia and the increasing gas prices.

This would cripple every working family, small business, and farmer in the country.

March and protest

The Cost-of-Living Coalition is calling a protest outside the Dáil at 1 pm on May 18th. A big national march will follow in Dublin on June 18th.

RIO will host a public meeting in Hineys Crossmolina on May 26th at 8.30 pm. This will be a build-up to the national march with its coalition partners in Dublin on Saturday, June 18th, 2022.

RIO is calling on all our workers, families, small business people, and farmers to join the Rural Ireland Organisation. Support this campaign that is so critically important to our future.
