Community reeling after ‘hard-working gentleman’ killed in farm accident

The man, who died in an incident on a farm in south Armagh on Saturday (June 6th), as reported by us here, has been named.

30-year-old Shane Lappin was reportedly working with machinery when the incident occurred shortly after 3pm.

It is understood that a telehandler was involved in the accident, which is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The Keady native worked for a local agricultural feed company and married Sarah in August of last year.

Hardworking young gentleman

Sinn Féin MLA, Cathal Boylan, extended his condolences to the family and friends of Lappin.

Speaking, the Newry and Armagh MLA said: “This evening [Saturday, June 6th], the community are shocked by the death of Shane in a tragic accident.

“He was a hardworking young gentleman and came from a well-known and respected family. We send our condolences to his wife Sarah, parents, Francie and Anna and the entire family circle.”

“This evening and over the coming days, the community will stand fully behind the family and friends of this young man. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Tributes

In a post on social media, Sarah’s aunt, said: “It is with absolute shock sadness and disbelief that I am posting the tragic loss of a beautiful young man, Shane Lappin, husband to my heartbroken niece Sarah, in a tragic accident this afternoon.”

“Words cannot describe how heartbroken we all are. They were only married last year, and had their whole lives ahead of them building their dreams and hopes for the future.”

“A lovely person inside and out who was always there and willing to help anyone in need.”

“My heart goes out to Shane’s parents, Francie and Anna, his brother Barry and his sister Annette and family. And to my own sister, Yvonne, brother-in-law Stephen, nieces, Laura, and Aimee and the entire Lappin and King families and friends of Shane.”

“So many people touched with sorrow tonight. But my biggest thoughts go out to Sarah who lost her soulmate today.”

“I cannot imagine what you are going through my love. I just want to wrap my arms around you and make everything better, but I can’t and it’s breaking my heart – why is the world such a cruel place?” the social media post concluded.
