Over 300 lots in Castlerea, as farmers avail of favourable silage & hay-making conditions

According to Brendan Egan, a smaller entry came under the hammer at Castlerea Mart’s general cattle sale on Thursday, June 8th, 2023.

At the previous week’s sale, over 500 entries crossed the sale, while Thursday saw over 300 lots pass through the rings as farmers availed of favourable weather conditions for silage and hay-making.

Bullocks maxed out at €2440, heifers hit €2120, and cull cows peaked at €2270.

The weanling rings witnessed bulls top out at €3.66/kg, while heifer weanlings reached €4.03/kg.

Cows with calves at foot made up to €2,200, while the calf ring recorded a full clearance.

Dry cow prices:

  • LM – 835KGS – €2270;
  • LM – 750KGS – €2120 (3 cows together – All 2018-born);

Last week’s cattle sale

According to Brendan Egan, the bullock and heifer rings reported “very little change” in relation to prices, while the weanling rings saw “excellent” demand, with bulls peaking at €3.62/kg and heifers to €4.36/kg on Thursday, June 1st, 2023.

The dry cow trade witnessed a top call of €2380, while cows with calves at foot followed on the price table at €2320.

Calf numbers, Egan noted, remained strong for the time of year, with variance in price, depending on quality.
