Castlerea Mart Report – Cattle Prices – 05-05-2022

According to Brendan Egan, over 700 animals passed through the gates at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, May 5th, 2022.

The mart manager reported that prices “held up extremely well,” at the mart’s most recent general cattle.

He explained that the dry cow trade “remained firm” as prices peaked at €2,560 or €3.08/kg.

Meanwhile, cows with calves at foot sold for up to €2,300 and springers soared to €1,530.

Meanwhile, according to Egan, calves made up to €460 with an average price of €135/head.

On the other hand, the heifer ring reported a good clearance with lots making up to €1,890. Egan noted that lighter stores were “in demand” this week, a move which improved grass growth aided.

Lastly, weanling bulls and weanling heifers both topped out at €3.66/kg.

Egan noted that there was “increased farmer activity this week as the deadline for form filling approaches”.
