Start of Ramadan coincides with increase in sheep throughput

Last week’s sheep throughput seen an 8,926 increase from the same period last year.

The kill rose from 42,794 in 2019 to 51,720 during the week commencing April 20th, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s (DAFM) database.

The increase experienced contrasts the trend of the previous week, where the number fell by 13,897.

Last week’s throughput:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 37,194;
  • Spring lambs: 8,257;
  • Ewes and rams: 6,265;
  • Light lambs: 4;
  • Total: 51,720.

Cumulative (excludes this week’s throughput):

  • Lambs/hoggets: 716,055;
  • Spring lambs: 19,240;
  • Ewes and rams: 99,072;
  • Light lambs: 22;
  • Total: 843,389.

Corresponding week last year:

Prices:

Plants are quoting between €6.00-€6.30/kg for hoggets this week, with tops of €6.40/kg. Spring lambs are making between €6.40-€6.75/kg, while cull ewes are selling for €2.80-€3.00/kg.
