Beef Trade: Quotes unchanged with over 35,000 cattle slaughtered weekly

Quotes appear to remain unchanged this week, with the base price for steers hovering around €3.70-€3.75/kg, while between €3.75-€3.80/kg is being offered for heifers.

In terms of young bulls, quotes are ranging from €3.40-€3.50/kg with €3.75-€3.80/kg for R and U grade-types.

€2.90-€3.00/kg is on the table for P grade cows, with €3.10/kg for Os and €3.20-€3.30/kg for Rs, with reportedly at least an additional 5c/kg available for culls of this grade in some plants.

“Deals being done, fight for price.” that’s the advice from the Irish Farmers’ Association.

Throughput

The national beef kill for the week commencing July 27th stood at 35,267 head (including 22 calves), according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s database.

Breakdown:

  • Young bulls: 1,577;
  • Bulls: 803;
  • Steers: 16,500;
  • Cows: 7,019;
  • Heifers: 9,346;
  • Calves: 22.

Comparison

The kill for the corresponding period last year was 29,138 head (including 44 calves), figures from its database shows.  

With the inclusion of last week’s throughout, 1,047,474 head have been processed in Department of Ag-approved beef plants to date this year.
