Ballinrobe: Cull cows a ‘blazing’ trade with prices to €2,340 – Gibsey

According to Teresa Gibsey, prices maxed out at €2,340 at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart’s general cattle sale on Wednesday, June 7^th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The mart’s assistant manager reported that bullocks ranged from €700 to €1,700 per head or €1.95 to €3.75 per kg. The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.62/kg.

• AAX – 530KG – €1,380 – €2.60/KG;
• AAX – 405KG – €1,070 – €2.64/KG;
• CHX – 368KG – €1,270 – €3.46/KG;
• LMX – 320KG – €1,200 – €3.75/KG.

Heifer prices

Heifers pushed from €650 to €1,520 per head or €2.36 to €3.98 per kg.

The average for heifers 500kg plus was €2.60/kg, and those in the 400 to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €2.65/kg.

• CHX – 340KG – €1,250 – €3.68/KG;
• CHX – 265KG – €1,050 – €3.96/KG;

Cull cow prices

Dry cows were a “blazing” trade with some top-quality lots on offer.

Prices ranged from €880 to €2,340 with a top call acquired by a farmer from Ballymartin, Kilmaine, who had a 895kg Charolais-cross.

• LM – 770kgs – €2,150 – €2.79/kg;
• CH – 890kgs – €2,330 – €2.62/kg;
• HEX – 800kgs – €1,940 – €2.43/kg;
• BBX – 545kgs – €1,100 – €2.02/kg;
• LMX – 545kgs – €1,180 – €2.17/kg.

According to Niamh Joyce of Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, the spell of weather “brought a wave of hot trade” to the Mayo-based venue for its final cattle sale of May.

Bullocks were “the headliners”, with prices topping €1790 for a 610kg LMX bullock, which stood €2.93/kg.

Weanling bulls “followed suit” with cracking prices for the few but quality stock on show, the spokesperson noted.

Cull cows pushed from €900 up to €1940 a head, with a €1500 average across the board.

Top of the price table was €1940 or €2.69 for a 7-year-old, 720kg LMX cow.

Cows with calves at foot were “plentiful” this week, ranging from €1220 up to €2000 in price.

The top price of €2000 went to an 11-year-old CHX Cow from a Headford farmer with twin LMX heifer calves at foot.
