Prices max out at €2,820 in Ballinrobe – Gibsey

Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart – Cattle Prices – 10-05-2023

According to Teresa Gibsey, assistant manager at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, prices ranged from €40 to €2,820 at its general cattle sale on Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

Bullocks were in “strong” demand on the back of a clearance of 98% and prices from €690 to €1,770 per head or €2.08 to €3.92 per kg. The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.99/kg, and entries 400kg to 500kg averaged out at €3.08/kg.
Prices on the day were:

  • LMX – 565KG – €1,770 – €3.13/KG;
  • CHX – 550KG – €1,760 – €3.20/KG;
  • CH – 440KG – €1,600 – €3.64/KG;
  • LMX – 405KG – €1,480 – €3.65/KG;
  • LMX – 330KG – €1,290 – €3.91/KG.

Heifers

The continental heifer sale met with “great” demand with a full clearance and highs of €2,820 or €4.70/kg.

Heifer prices ranged from €710 to €2.820 per head or €2.18 to €4.70 per kg. The average for heifers 500kg plus was €3.07/kg & heifers 400 to 500kg average was €2.84/kg.

Prices on the day as follows:

  • LMX – 600KG – €2,820 – €4.70/KG;
  • AAX – 660KG – €1,950 – €2.95/KG;
  • LMX – 405KG – €1,310 – €3.23/KG;
  • LMX – 487KG – €1,490 – €3.06/KG;
  • CHX – 325KG – €1,240 – €3.82/KG.

Weanling bulls

Weanling bulls were a “good trade”, and with a clearance of 99%, prices ranged from €820 to €1,790 per head or €2.73 to €3.92 per kg. The average price for weanling 200kgs to 350kgs was €3.38/kg, and weanlings 350kgs to 450kgs stood at €3.06/kg.

Prices:

  • LMX – 590KG – €1,790 – €3.03/KG;
  • AAX – 325KG – €1,160 – €3.57/KG;
  • LMX – 255KG – €1,000 – €3.92/KG;
  • LMX – 260KG – €1,000 – €3.85/KG.

Weanling heifers

Weanling heifers changed hands from €840 to €1030 per head or €2.86 to €4.20 per kg. The average for heifers 200 – 350kg was €3.57/kg, an increase on last week’s average, according to Gibsey.
Prices:  

  • LMX – 245KG – €1,030 – €4.20/KG;
  • LMX – 245KG – €1,000 – €4.08/KG;
  • CHX – 265KG – €990 – €3.74/KG;
  • CHX – 255KG – €950 – €3.73/KG.

Cull cows

Dry cows pushed from €380 to €1,880, with the best price going to a farmer from Townagh, Srah, Claremorris at €2.71/kg with a 695kg Charolais-cross.

  • SIX – 605kgs – €1,460;
  • MOX – 560kgs – €1,140;
  • AAX – 625kgs – €1,470;
  • LM – 660kgs – €1,540;
  • SH – 595kgs – €1,270;
  • SIX – 680kgs – €1,950.

Sucklers

Meanwhile, in the suckler ring, a pedigree registered Simmental cow with a Limousin-cross heifer calf at foot maxed out at €1,980, with prices from €1,220 in this category.

Suck calves

According to Gibsey, suck calves were a “sticky trade” this week, with a mixture of Belgian Blue-crosses, Aberdeen Angus-crosses, Hereford-crosses and Friesian calves on offer.

Prices pushed from €40 to €280 (BBX bull) with an average of €115/head across the board.

Note:

  • The mart will continue to run a suck calf sale in ring 3 from 11:30 am sharp every Wednesday until further notice.
  • Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 – Special continental heifer sales – sold after cows
  • From now onwards, special bullock sales will be held on the first and last Wednesday of every month;
  • Sheep sales will continue on Thursdays from 11 am sharp.
