Bullocks to €2,960 (€2,200 over the kg) in Balla

According to Stephen Hannon, manager of Balla Mart, just over 700 lots came under the hammer across three rings at Saturday’s (May 20th, 2023), general cattle sale.

He reported that “numbers are dropping, but prices are remaining strong”, with prices to €2,960 in the bullock ring, up to €2,700 for suckler pairs, up to €2,060 for heifers, and highs of €2,550 for cull cows.

Bullock prices

Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €3.23/kg, while stores in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €3.19/kg and heavier types, north of 500kg, sold for €3.19/kg on average.

Hannon noted: “Quality, heavy bullocks 700kg+ were making up to €1,650 with the weight, but one, in particular, made 2200 over the kg.”

“He was an exceptional Charolais bullock and possibly one of the best prices with the kg recorded at the venue.”

He came in the form of an April-2021-born 760kg entry at €2,960 or €3.89/kg.

Heifer prices

According to Hannon, just over 250 entries came under the hammer in the heifer ring on Saturday.

Lighter store heifers 300 – 400kg averaged out at €3.21/kg, while heifers 400kg to 500kg levelled at €3.02/kg and those 500kg+ sold for €3.02/kg on average.

Top of the trade in this ring at €2,060 for a Limousin heifer, weighing 535kgs.

Dry cow prices

The third ring was in operation as usual for cows on Saturday, with, in the words of Hannon, a “good trade” prevailing.

The category topper was a CH X LM cow born in Jan-2018, weighing 870kg, and she made €2,550.

Sucklers

Meanwhile, the suckler ring saw highs of €2,700 for a 2017-born Limousin-cross-Belgian-Blue calf with a bull calf at foot.

Weanling bulls

Weanling bulls are now, once again, selling on Saturday, following the mart’s raft of bi-weekly weanling sales over the past number of weeks.

Those 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.11/kg, while 350kg to 450kg types levelled at €3.25/kg, and entries north of 450kg sold for €3.21/kg, on average.

A 535kg LM bull sold for €2,080 or €3.89/kg, while a lighter 390kg BBX bull made €1,350 or €3.46/kg.
