Cull cows to €2,610 and heifers to €2,600 at Balla Mart

According to Stephen Hannon, some 700 lots passed through three rings at Balla Mart on Saturday, May 28^th, 2022, as part of its end of month continental sale.

The mart manager and general manager of Aurivo Marts reported that virtual, factory and northern buyers were active at Saturday’s sale.

Speaking following the sale, he said: “Cattle have become very dear and appear to be getting dearer every week.”

“Cow prices were described as unreal, while there was a fine trade for quality beef cattle, both heifers and bullocks.”

“Averages reached the €3.00 p/kg and top lots reached a new height of 3.84+p/kg.”

Cull cow prices 

According to Hannon, the sale attracted some 130 cull cows, which met with an improved trade due to the presence of online and NI buyers.

Top of the town in this ring was a BBX, 885kg, for €2,610 or €2.95/kg and a March-2013-born Charolais dry cow sold for €2,580.

According to Hannon, bullocks 300kg to 400kg met with an improved trade and levelled at €2.98/kg.

Meanwhile, store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.96/kg and heavier lots, 500kg + averaged €3.02p/kg with the tops to €3.80/kg.

Top prices included €2,460 for an April-2020-born Charolais-cross, weighing 745kg, at €2,460 or 3.30p/kg and another 635kg Charolais made €2,440.00 or €3.8/kg.

Heifer prices

According to Hannon, close to 300 lots passed through ring two (heifers), with this ring reporting a “good” clearance.

He reported that heifers up to 400 kg levelled at €2.96/kg, while heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €3.00/kg and heavy heifers maxed out at 3.13p/kg.

Top price in this ring at €2,600 was a Limousin, weighing 585kg, while another 625kg Charolais-cross changed hands for €2,130 or €3.41/kg.
