Sarah Holland and her family, who hail from Loughane, Blarney, Co. Cork, won’t be forgetting lambing 2020 anytime soon, writes Catherina Cunnane.
The farm family are celebrating after three sibling ewes delivered eleven lambs – including a set of quintuplets, a one-in-a-million occurrence, in the space of three hours.
Sarah explained to this publication that three sister Rouge sheep were scanned approximately three months ago.“Dolly was scanned for 5 lambs, Poppie was scanned for 3 lambs and Minnie was scanned for 3 lambs.”
“Seeing these numbers from three sheep, we knew it was going to be a lot of work.”
“Building up to the due date, the three sheep were treated like our babies – they were fed fresh meal every day and received a clean bed every night.”
Miracle birth
Their hard work and dedication paid off on Sunday when two of the ewes in question had triplets, while one of the sisters delivered five lambs. “3 sister ewes had 11 lambs in just under three 3 hours between 7 am and 10 am.”
“It’s a tremendous feeling to have 3 sister sheep give us 11 strong healthy lambs in just under 3 hours.”
“We have put a lot of care and work into these sheep. To have all 11 lambs alive and all mums doing good is simply amazing.” Sarah concluded.
