Online sale of pedigree and cross-bred ‘world’s cutest sheep’

Valais Blacknose Sale on Showstock.ie

ShowStock.ie, Ireland’s “leading” premier livestock catalogue, is hosting the second annual Bonniconlon Valais Blacknose online sale this week.

Bonniconlon Valais Blacknose is a pedigree flock of the world-famous ‘cutest sheep’ originating from the mountainous Valais region of Switzerland.

Melissa Walsh established the flock, which is one of a handful in the country, in May 2019 and is the current secretary of the Irish Valais Blacknose Sheep Society.

She is offering a selection – 12 lots of pedigree and cross-bred sheep – for sale through the online sales platform.

The sale is accepting bids until Sunday evening (May 1st) between 6 pm – 8.45 pm.

There is a mixture of combinations, including 2 young ram lambs, 5 ewe lambs from Mayo Blackface and Jacob ewes born in November-2021 and 3 ewes with ewe lambs at foot, including “a very colourful” combination of a Jacob ewe with her 2 April-born ewe lambs.

The sale also includes 2 “very exciting” January-2022-born lots with full Swiss back breeding; a pedigree ram lamb and a pedigree ewe lamb, both registered and genotyped with the Irish Valais Blacknose Sheep Society.

Valais Blacknose

Valais Blacknose is a dual-purpose mountain breed that is currently farmed for its meat and wool.

The Blacknose graze in the Alps in the summer months and are housed during winter. The Blacknose is a sturdy breed that has adapted well to the mountain’s harsh conditions.

As Cliodhna Muldoon previously explained, it was thought that the Blacknose existed since the 15th century.

However, their appearance has significantly changed as they once resembled the likes of the Scottish Blackface.
