Just under 100 lots for ‘biggest and most anticipated’ Charolais bull sale of the year

98 “top-quality entries will go under the hammer at the Irish Charolais Cattle Society’s “biggest and most anticipated” bull sale of the year next month.

The Christmas Cracker bull sale will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, at Elphin Mart, County Roscommon.

According to Nevan McKiernan, this year’s lots have been pre-inspected from over 170 entries “to ensure a high overall standard for customers”.

Charolais cattle

Speaking to That’s Farming, he said: “Charolais cattle are absolutely flying in the commercial marketplace.”

“Charolais weanlings have proved time and time again this autumn that they are the ringside favourite with buyers, outselling all other breeds.”

“A recent study carried out by Herdwatch found that Charolais-cross calves had the best average daily gain across all breeds, standing at 1.15kg/day.”

“As well as this, the Charolais breed has made great improvements on calving ease in recent years, with the breed average calving figure reducing to 5.68% on beef cows. This sale offers a wide selection of bulls for different cow types and systems,” he added.

€300 back

As an added incentive for buyers this year, the Charolais Society will give €300 back to the purchasers of the first 30 bulls to sell for over €4,500 in the ring at this sale.

  • All bulls will be export tested and will be eligible for export on the day to Northern Ireland.
  • All bulls will be fertility tested; bulls sold within the Republic of Ireland are also fertility insured.
  • Moreover, all entries are genotyped, sire verified & myostatin tested.

Another incentive is €100 towards transport costs to Northern Ireland, or transport can be arranged to Northern Ireland after the sale.

There is a deferred payment scheme option in place, whereby buyers only pay one-third of the price of the bull on the day of sale. Anyone interested in availing of this must contact the Charolais office at least five days before the sale to apply.
