Some 400 calves were on offer at Kilkenny Mart on Tuesday, February 23rd, according to George Candler.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that a smaller entry went under the hammer, whereas 450 lots exchanged hands at last week’s sale.

“First-rate Friesian bull calves sold for up to €170 with lesser types as low as €10/head. Exporters were less active than this time last year.”

Last week’s sale:

Some 450 entries were offered for sale at Kilkenny Mart on Tuesday, February 16th, according to George Candler who noted that Friesian bull calves sold from €10/head upwards.

The mart’s auctioneer noted that calf numbers are increasing week-on-week, with Hereford, Angus, and continental-types “selling well”.

“A bigger sale of calves with smaller and younger Friesian bull calves on offer, which were more difficult to sell as they do not fit the export agenda.”

“Lighter Friesian bull calves are difficult to sell with many of that type ranging from €10 to €40/head. Exporters were a bit more active compared to last week. Continental bulls peaked at €450 with a Belgian Blue heifer to a top call of €420.”

  • Second-rate Friesian bulls – €10-€50/head;
