In the height of lockdown, over the Easter weekend, Ciara Doorly welcomed Charolais-cross triplet calves on her family farm.
The Doorly family farm a 60-cow commercial herd, comprising of Charolais, Angus, Hereford and Limousin breeding females in Donamon, County Roscommon.
One of their Angus-cross cows delivered triplet calves, two bulls and one heifer, on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021.
Speaking to That’s Farming, Ciara said: “The triplets are sired by our Charolais stockbull. The dam, an Aberdeen-Angus-cross, is a four-year-old cow; she will be five-years-old in November and has had five calves to date.”
“The first calf was born unassisted. Then, we waited a while and there was no sign of the next two to come. We called the vet; he came and delivered them.”
“She was scanned, so we knew she was having triplets. This is our first set of triplets on the family farm. Thankfully, the three calves and their mother are strong, healthy and doing really well.”
“The cow will rear them on the cow, and we will assist with a bottle if needed. Down the line, we plan to sell them as weanlings.” Ciara concluded.
