The Irish Beef and Lamb Association issued a timely message to members on World Suicide Prevention Day. It reads as follows:
“As farmers, we can all relate to this in many ways. We all know of valued family members, friends and neighbours, who have left this world through suicide.
There is a long list of factors and reasons: family pressures like separation, parental alienation, domestic violence, financial pressures, or poor health such as depression, alcohol or drug abuse, gambling addiction, pressures from the workload on the farm, etc.
For all those reasons, there is help and a solution. It takes one step in the right direction; that step is to talk to someone, anyone, just talk.
That first talk is the release valve from pressure. With this talk comes help, solutions, other opinions and ways of dealing with the things that have gotten to you.
To all those out there who have any concerns about anyone, take the phone, make a call to check in with them.
We are all in this together; we stood on the roads together; we stand in this life together.
For all those in officialdom, in positions of power and dealing with farmers, a change in attitude with a solution-based focus would really help and will save lives.
There are many organisations out there to help. Some of our members have benefited from the help received from the Men’s Aid Ireland.
We can forward a list of numbers for them all. Remember, you are not alone in this world, we all struggle and stumble, but the key is to get up again.
Steady the ship, make a plan for a new course, get the help and continue on this journey of living a good life.
