Westmeath breeders’ weanling heifer tops Shorthorn sale at €4,000

According to the Irish Shorthorn Society, there was “strong” interest from buyers across the country and Northern Ireland at its premier sale on Saturday, November 20th, 2021.

Tommy Shryane of Rooskey Shorthorns, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, officiated as judge of the society’s sale.

In a statement to That’s Farming, a spokesperson for the society provided the following information.

Leading the charge at €4,000 at Roscommon Mart was January-2021-born heifer Ballinliig Dolly Ella (RO)(P) from Terry and Amelda Middleton, Moate, Co. Westmeath.

She has a replacement index of €139. She is from Clonina Explorer 300 (RO)(P) and Ballinlig Molly Dolly (RO), by Waukaru Coppertop 464.

The reserve champion female – Glannaven Flame (RW)(P), exhibited by Kieran Flatley, Kilkelly, Co. Mayo – went under the hammer at €3,900.

The December-2020-born is by Hussar of Upsall (P) and from the dam, Clashagad Daisy 2nd (RO), by Caramba Ultra Kelt K187 (RO). She sold with a replacement index of €165.

Other notable prices 

Finding a new owner at €3,700 was champion female, Ardclay Ms Kiki Fancy 2 (RLW) from Laurence Murphy, Tullow, Carlow.

The January 1st, 2020-born maiden heifer is by Eiomor Ideal 50p and from the dam, Cairnsmore Kikki Fancy Trisha, who is sired by Podehole Edmond (H).

At €2,750 was Erne Me Me (RLW) (h), a January-2020-born heifer due on June 25th, 2021, to junior stockbull.

Patrick Brady, from Loughduff, Cavan, who bred the heifer, described her as being “very correct” and a “great addition to any herd; backed with a pedigree to match”.

Anthony Dockery, Elphin, Co. Roscommon, took home €2,200 for his reserve champion bull, Rockville Bean 500 (RO)(P). According to the society, this February-2021-born bull was the highest-priced male on the day.

He has a replacement index of €137 and is by Rockville Clohessy Dice RLW and from the dam, Drimna Dainty, a 16-year-old cow who is from Dovea Sir James 2nd.

The champion bull – Jackie Joker 2nd (RLW) exhibited by John Heneghan, Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon – which changed hands for €2000.

The April-2020-born male is by Sliabhbhui Prince 2nd and from the dam, Rockville Nora 8th (R) who is sired by Bushypark Enda 4th.
