Breeders of €13,200 Red Angus heifer to auction bull for suicide charity

Mercury Ur Not Alone for the hammer in aid of charity

Shane and John Murphy of the Mercury herd in North Cork, who bred the €13,200 Mercury Red Unbeatable Kim ET (Irish and European Red Angus record price holder), are auctioning a bull for charity.

Mercury Ur Not Alone is a rising yearling bull that is coming under the hammer as part of Pedigree Sales Elite Auctions Red Ribbon & Blue Ribbon sale.

The Murphys will donate 100% of his sale to the Pieta House suicide awareness event, Darkness into Light. This will take place on May 7th, 2022.

Pieta was established to provide free, accessible one-to-one counselling to people suffering from suicidal ideation, engaging in self-harm or those bereaved by suicide.

This timed auction sale will finish on Saturday, April 23rd. 2022.

In a statement, Murphy said:

“This bull is quite special in the fact that he was born the morning of Darkness into Light 2021.”

“When many were out walking for suicide, this bull took his first breath. Hence the name that followed – Ur Not Alone.”

“Given the moment of his birth, it was always our intention that the proceeds from his sale would go to this very worthy charity.”

He continued:

“We would like to especially thank Tommy Staunton at Pedigree Sales Elite Auctions for all he has done in the lead up to the sale.”

“The new platform – elite.pedigreesale.com – is a unique offering to pedigree breeders and offers another tier to on-farm sales.”

Performance-packed pedigree

Mercury Ur Not Alone is the first son of the herd’s stock bull, Coraghy Steel. According to Shane, Steel is proving to be an “exceptional” breeder.

Steel is by the herd’s former stock bull, Luddenmore Just the Business, whose first five daughters levelled at just over €4,500. Steel’s dam is Mercury J Flora which changed hands for €8,100 in 2018.

Furthermore, his dam, Macchina Blackbird P005, was imported from England. She offers an outcross on her sire side while still going back to the famous Coldstream Blackbird 9G.

Topping off this pedigree, Ur Not Alone is backed by figures ranking in the top 1% within and across breeds for Dairy Beef Index at €113.

Shane concluded: “So why not do your bit? Get a high indexed bull ready for action while also providing vital funds to a worthy charity.”

“100% of the sale price for Ur Not Alone will be donated to Peta House, Darkness into Light,” he added.

This week, the sale goes live on elite.pedigreesales.com, with bidding open from April 21st and closing Saturday, April 23rd, 2022.
