Hospice CHX bullock makes €2,240 in Kanturk Mart

A 24-month-old Charolais-cross bullock has sold for €2,240 in aid of Marymount Hospice, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The animal, which was donated by a family which requested anonymity, crossed the scales at 580kgs at Kanturk Mart on Tuesday, June 20th, 2023, and was snapped up by Gerdy Ryan, Guarrane, Banteer.

Marymount, which is the country’s oldest hospice, provides specialist-enabling palliative care of the highest quality for those with a life-limiting illness and care for older people in its community.

The sale of the bullock coincides with a concert and raffle being held in the mart this Saturday, June 24th, 2023, at 8 pm.

“Duhallow Supports Marymount is a concert featuring a host of local talent coming together to raise funds for Marymount.”

“It is a ticket-only event, and tickets cost €20 for entry on the night. They are available from a host of different venues in the Duhallow region.”

“Also, on the night, there will be a monster raffle with six fantastic prizes the tickets for this are €10, and these are available from the mart office,” Hallihan added.

Raffle prizes are as follows:

  • 1st – 2 nights with breakfast and evening meal in the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen;
  • 2 – 1 night in the Maritime Hotel, Bantry, with breakfast;
    3 – 1 night in River Lee Hotel, Cork, with breakfast;
  • 4 – 1 night in Kingsley Hotel, Cork, with breakfast;
  • 5 – 1 night in Harding Hotel, Dublin;
  • 6 – A day trip to the Dáil.
Cattle prices at Tuesday’s sale

According to Seamus O’ Keeffe, the mart’s general cattle sale on Tuesday attracted a small offering of some 100 calves and 150 cattle.

He commented that “prices were the same as last week with the price of the day being 9 AA bullocks weighing 341kg making €1040 – €3.10/kg”.

The following are some sample prices from the sale:

Cows:

  • 1 LMX – 610kg – €1540
  • 1 FR – 735kg – €1360
  • 1 FR – 635kg – €1280

Heifers:

  • 2 AAX – 510kg – €1280
  • 6 HE – 375kg – €840
  • 9 AA – 331kg – €880

Bullocks:

  • 2 HE – 465kg – €1150;
  • 6 FR – 510kg – €1040;
  • 6 CH – 430kg – €1110.
