Report from Irish Limousin Cattle Society sale held at Athenry Mart on Friday, April 16th, 2021.
Bulls sold to an average of €3,648 at the Irish Limousin Cattle Society’s annual Athenry sale on Friday, April 16th, 2021.
According to the society, the sale met with a clearance rate of 75%, with seven bulls selling for €4,000 or more, with a further nine making €3,000 or more.
A spokesperson for the Irish Limousin Cattle Society told That’s Farming:
“The sale was scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 15th. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions and DAFM regulations, the sale was rescheduled at short notice by 24 hours. We would like to thank all those involved in the sale for their support and understanding with this delay.”

Limousin sale Athenry Mart
Topping proceedings in Athenry at €6,600 was Keltic Pax, a powerful 19-month-old multi-starred bull. Pax is steeped in Keltic genetics – he is an outstanding son of Keltic Handsome and Keltic Jacaranda.
“Oozing style and class”, Pax came to the ring with five-star ratings in replacement index, terminal index, docility, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter caving interval.
Teleri Thomas, Longwood, Co. Meath bred Pat, and with keen interest from the second he stepped into the ring, he was snapped up by a Galway-based farmer.
Secondly, MAGHERA RONAN 2, an outstanding son of Goldies Jackpot, bred by Patrick Mulconroy, Clare, sold for €5,500. Fifteen-month-old Ronan boasts five-star ratings in replacement index, terminal index, docility, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter milk.
His home-bred dam, Maghera Harrison, has Ampertaine Commander and Ferry in her sire stack. Ronan also has a muscle score of 135, which is in the top 4%. After a flurry of bids, Candler tapped Ronan down to Andrew Monahan, Tubber, County Clare.
€4,500 and under
The Plumtree Fantastic son, SHANNON PAERO, from Kerry-based breeder Sarah McElligott, Asdee, changed hands for €4,500.
Paero is out of the Cloughhead Lord daughter Shannon Enya and has a replacement index of €92 and a terminal index of €133. Nineteen-month-old Paero was a Galway-based customers’s choice.
Also finding a new home at €4,500 was the Cameos’ son, BRICKHILL PRINCE 2. Born in September-2019, Prince 2 was bred by Michael McInerney, Cratloe, Co. Clare. His dam, Brickhill Kay, has Plumtree Fantastic and Navarin in her lineage. Prince 2 returns to county Clare to Martin Faule’s farm.
Local-based farmer Gerard Qualter purchased MEELICKADUFF POTTINGER, a Lodge Hamlet son and the 2017 National Show Champion Meelickaduff Honda Et.
To note, Michael Hester, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon bred €4,100 sixteen-month-old Pottinger. He has five-star ratings in the terminal index, carcass weight and carcass conformation.
NEWTOWN RODGER, a January-2020 born son of Ampertaine Commander, also sold for €4,100. Stanley Richardson, Newtowngore, Co. Leitrim bred Rodger, and his dam is the home-bred Lodge Hamlet daughter, Newtown Kassandra. Boasting an array of five-star ratings, Rodger Michael Kelly’s (Kilcolgan) pick.
€4,000 and under
Westmeath-based Philip and John Dixon acquired OLDTOWN PEDRO for €4,000. Pedro has Wilodge Cerberus, Broomfield Regentcey and Finnahy Amigo in his sire stack. William Hogan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary bred multi-starred Pedro.
Michael McKeown, Castlebar, Co. Mayo sold, CURRANE PACO, for €3,800. Paco is a son of Plumtree Fantastic and the Ampertaine Foreman daughter, Currane Kandy.
He has five-star ratings in replacement index, terminal index, docility, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter calving interval. Athenry-based Pat Hogan purchased Paco.
RUTLAND PYPER, a Usse, son, also realised €3,800. Pyper’s dam, Rutland Master Mind, has Queenshead Altea and Lino in her lineage.
Furthermore, Pyper has five-star ratings in replacement index, terminal index, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter milk. Michael Fleming acquired Pyper for his Tuam-based herd.
Oranmore-based Patrick Cooley purchased GLENASHRONE PICASSO for €3,600. Picasso has by Keltic Handsome, Malibu and Rocky in his sire stack. Diarmuid O’Riordan, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick bred multi-starred Picasso.
€3,500 and under
The youngest bull on offer, NEWTOWN RANGER, sold for €3,500. Ranger has Loyal, Wilodge Cerberus and Ronick Hawk in his pedigree. Stanley Richardson bred twelve-month old multi-starred Ranger, and Ciaran Leech, Co. Meath was the successful purchaser.
MAYTHORN PAUDIE, a stylish Bavardage son, found a new home at €3,400. Paudie was the pick of Denis Beirne, Co. Roscommon.
November-2019-born Paudie has five-star ratings in Replacement Index, terminal index, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter milk. Martin McConnon, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan bred Paudie.
SHANNON PROGRESSIVE sold for €3,300. Progressive is by Edakkya (a top French tested bull) and out of a Nimbus-Mn dam Shannon Catherine. Sarah McElligott bred progressive, and he heads to a Galway-based herd.
Besides, James Parkinson, Cashel, Co. Tipperary accepted €3,100 for his August-2019-born, MARLHILL PEDRO. Pedro has five-star ratings in many traits and was acquired by Tony Reilly from Tuam.
€3,000 was the top call for CURRANE PHOENIX from Michael McKeown’s herd. Phoenix, who has Plumtree Fantastic, Sarkley Pepsi and Malibu in his sire stack, was purchased Phoenix.

- Bobby O’Connell, Co. Clarina, Limerick presented the Castleview Lawerencer son, BALLYBROWN RONAN, at the sale. Ronan’s dam, Roundhill Lunanime 1656, has enjoyed a successful show career; she is a daughter of Elite Ice Cream Et. Ronan sold for €3,000 to Mossy Walsh, Athlone.
- MEELICKADUFF PSP, a son of Tomschoice Iceberg out of a Carmorn Copilot daughter, sold for €2,900.
- KELTIC PABLO, a son of Keltic Handsome out of an Ampertaine Foreman daughter, sold for €2,700.
- BRICKHILL PROMISCUOUS a son of Bavardage out of a Brooklands F0959 daughter sold for €2,700.
- BALLYBROWN PETE, a son of Castleview Lawerencer out of a Vermeil daughter, sold for €2,300.
- Lastly, GLENASHRONE POWERFULLBULL, a son of Keltic Handsome, out of a Highlander daughter sold for €2,200.
