Weanlings to €1,450 at Kilkenny’s show and sale

Kilkenny Mart – Weanling Prices – 04-10-2022

According to George Candler, the €3.00/kg price barrier was breached on numerous occasions in the weanling bull and weanling heifer ring at Kilkenny Mart’s show and sale on 04-10-2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that weanling bulls topped out at €1,450, while weanling heifers soared to €1,500 at Tuesday’s sale, which attracted some 500 lots.

He explained that Friesian weanling bulls, Hereford and Angus-types, ranged from €1.65 to €2.45 per kilo.

A special suckler sale saw in calf lots range from €1,200 to €1,700 cows with calves at foot changing hands from €1300 to €2460 per unit.

Bulls 400kgs+ – €2.20-€3.30/kg or €920-€1,450/head:

• LM – 485kgs – €1,450;
• 4 CH – 445kgs – €1,370;
• 3 SI – 440kgs – €1,220.

300-400kgs bulls – €2.00-€3.58/kg or €700-€1,250/head:

• CH – 395kgs – €1,250;
• 4 CH – 360kgs – €1,180;
• 2 LM – 345kgs – €1,230;
• 2 BB – 310kgs – €1,110.

Bulls <300kgs – €2.40-€3.76/kg or €600-€1,090/head:

This week’s sheep prices

According to George Candler, some 500 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, 03-10-2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that a “similar” trade prevailed to last week, with more customers operating.

As a result, “quality” butcher/factory-type entries met with a “sharper” trade with prices to €147/head for lambs and cast ewes to €160/head.
