Cull ewes report ‘the biggest decrease’ in price at Kilkenny

According to George Candler, a “good, steady” trade prevailed for both hoggets and spring lambs at Kilkenny Mart on Monday, April 26th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that cull ewes witnessed the biggest decrease compared to the past few weeks.

Spring lambs sold to €170, while hoggets topped out at €175 and cull ewes topped out at €226/head.

He explained that some 500 lots went under the hammer at this week’s sheep sale.

Butcher hoggets – €2.35-€3.15/kg or €155-€175/head:

  • 6 74kgs – €175;
  • 8 65kgs – €169;
  • 12 56kgs – €167;
  • 15 55kgs – €157;
  • 12 54kgs – €168;
  • 14 53kgs – €167.

Spring lambs – €3.30/kg-€3.85/kg or €148-€170/head:

  • 4 50kgs – €170;
  • 13 49kgs – €168;
  • 5 48kgs – €167;
  • 12 46kgs – €167;
  • 18 43kgs – €157.

Other categories:

  • Cast ewes – €80-€226/head.

Dairy stock:

  • Friesian maiden heifers ranged from €620 to €820;
  • Freshly calved Friesian cows – €1000 to €1700 per head;
  • Freshly calved Friesian heifers – €1300 to €2020 per head.

Last week’s cattle sale

According to George Candler, some 1,100 lots passed through the rings at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, April 21st, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that beef-type and forward store entries met with an “excellent” trade. Meanwhile, quality stores were “also in demand” but long-keep, plainer-type animals were “more difficult to sell”.

  • Bullocks 600kgs+ – €2.00-€3.40/kg or €1,440-€2,200/head;
  • 500kgs-600kgs – €2.15-€3.32/kg or €1,130-€1,930/head;
  • 400-500kgs – €1.90-€3.20/kg or €780-€1,490/head;
  • <400kgs – €1.70-€3.32/kg or €780-€1,280/head:
  • Beef heifers – €2.25-€3.20/kg or €1,700-€2,080/head;
  • Forward store heifers – €2.30-€3.05/kg or €980-€1,500/head;
  • Light store heifers – €1.80-€3.10/kg or €480-€1,160/head;
  • Friesian culls – €1.05-€2.35/kg;
  • Continental culls – €1.60-€2.97/kg.
