‘For the past 25 years, our annual breeding heifer sales have gone from strength to strength’

This Saturday (October 3rd), the annual Simmental commercial breeding heifer sales will get underway with the first taking place at Aurivo Ballymote Mart.

In fact, this is the 25th year of this Western Simmental Club-organised event.

This year there are 245 entries for sale: 70 in-calve, 130 maidens and 45 weanling heifers.

Viewing for this sale will be between 9:00am and 10:30am on Saturday morning with the sale commencing immediately after viewing.

Potential buyers are asked to make prior contact with the mart on 071 9183364 to speed-up the viewing process on the morning.

Tullamore Mart

On next Monday (October 5th), the attention turns to Tullamore Mart and the South Eastern Club sale which consists of 55 heifers.

This sale will run before the weekly mart weanling sale and will start at 3:30 pm. Again, like Ballymote, potential customers are asked to make prior contact with the mart on 057 93 21196.

Gort Mart

The South Western Club sale taking place at Gort sees a change of night to a Friday and occured on Friday, October 16th starting at 6:30 pm sharp.

Again, like 2019 there are close to 200 heifers entered for this sale. Gort Mart can be contacted on 091-631204 to finalise arrangements if considering purchasing.

Ballyjamesduff

This autumn’s breeding heifers sales finish with the North Eastern Club sale at Ballyjamesduff on Wednesday, October 21st starting at 7pm. There will be 50 heifers offered for sale here and Ballyjamesduff Mart can be contacted on 049 8544483.

Catalogues of the heifers for sale at all venues can be viewed on the society website here.

‘If buying stars, purchase the right animal with stars

Speaking to That’s Farming, Simmental Society C.O.M. Peadar Glennon, said: “For the past 25 years, our annual breeding heifer sales have gone from strength to strength.”

“This is a testament not only to the Simmental cows’ ability to excel in producing quality weanlings with very high growth rates, but also to the consistent quality that is available at these sales.”

“All sales have an element of pre-vetting to ensure that only suitable heifers are entered. This results in many buyers returning year-on-year to source quality replacements that they know will deliver for them.”

Peadar went on to highlight that there are still farmers in the market for heifers to meet BDGP requirement and he advised farmers not just to meet the requirement with an animal that “looks good on paper, but purchase heifers that have the quality to improve to the overall performance of their suckler herds”.

His message is very clear: “If buying stars, purchase the right animal with stars.”
