‘A Belgian Blue calf made €840’

Ennis Mart – Cattle Prices – 15-03-2022

Three rings were a hive of activity “all day” at Ennis Mart on Tuesday, March 15th, 2022.

According to a spokesperson, the Clare mart hosted a “very big” sale, with over 1,000 head on offer.

They reported that trade was “similar overall”, but more “mixed stock” crossed the scales in all rings.

They added that dairy stock met with a “good” trade, selling from €950 to €1,770.

Pairs in the suckler ring climbed to €2,020, while in-calf lots topped out at €1,960.

Furthermore, they noted that calf numbers were “similar to last week”.

“It was a case of the same story with light Friesian bulls as they sold from €5 to €45 and better lots ranged from €70 to €170.”

“A Belgian Blue bull calf made €840 but a real class calf. Hereford-cross calves made to €315 and Aberdeen Angus calves topped out at €200,” the spokesperson concluded.

Last week’s prices:

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, just under 1,000 lots came under the hammer on Tuesday, March 8th, 2022.

They reported that dairy cows ranged from €1,300-€1,710, while pairs in the suckler ring topped out at €2,720 and in-calf lots made to €1,840.

Furthermore, the spokesperson explained that there was a “bit more life” in the calf trade, but light Friesian bulls were “still a tough trade”.

“Poor Friesian bull calves made from €5 to €45, and better lots ranged from €70 to €120.”

“Meanwhile, Aberdeen Angus calves sold from €120 to €280 and Hereford-cross calves made €150 to €310.”

“Again, weanlings were a strong trade with quite a number of bullocks available. Quality in the heifer ring was variable, but a fine trade prevailed for anything nice,” the spokesperson added.
