Castlerea Mart Report – Cattle Prices – 31-03-2022

According to Brendan Egan, over 800 animals crossed the scales at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, March 31st, 2022.

The mart manager reported that farmers, northern customers and factory agents were active at the mart’s most recent weekly cattle sale.

The cow ring saw prices peak at €2,500, while prices reached €1,910 in the heifer ring – a price that was paid for a 520kg Limousin heifer.

Cows with calves at foot topped out at €1,900, while springers made up to €1400.

Meanwhile, in the weanling ring, bulls met with a “better trade” this week due to increased farmer activity.

Heifer weanlings recorded a top price of €1,100 for 280kg entry (€3.92/kg).

Finally, Egan reported a larger entry of calves on offer this week. He noted that better quality types recorded better prices, while trade for plainer-type lots was “unchanged”.
