Additional buyers for stock for further feeding at Castlerea Mart

Castlerea Mart report – cattle prices – 11-03-2021

Despite inclement weather conditions, trade held up “very well” for all categories of stock at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, March 11th, 2021, according to Brendan Egan.

The mart manager reported that additional buyers were in the market for stock for further feeding.

“The bullock and heifer rings reported good clearances, with bullocks peaking at €2.65/kg and heifers peaking €2.86/kg. The dry cows trade remains very strong also with cows reaching €1,980 or €2.22/kg.”

“More farmer activity has led to weanling price increases, while the calf trade was very good this week with better quality calves on offer. Breeding stock numbers continue to grow, with better quality lots commanding some fancy prices.” Egan added.

Castlerea Mart report – cattle sale – 04-03-2021

In some cases, cattle prices were up €30-€40/head on the previous week’s returns at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, March 4th, according to Brendan Egan.

The mart manager reported a “firm” trade, despite numbers increasing on a week-by-week basis.

He noted that heifers peaked at €2.92/kg with up to €2.71/kg for bullocks.

“In the weanling rings, demand for the quality weanling heifers was very good with prices peaking at €3.37/kg.”

“There was a similar tone in the bull weanling ring with demand strongest for the €300 to €350 weanlings with prices peaking at €3.38/kg.”

“Breeding stock continues to be in demand with springers reaching €2,000 while top-quality dry to €1870. The suck calf trade is holding firm for the quality calves, but the plainer dairy Friesian-cross and Jersey-cross calves were a harder sell.” Egan added.
