Calves from €2 to €390/head at Castlerea

Castlerea Mart report – cattle sale – 04-03-2021

In some cases, cattle prices were up €30-€40/head on last week’s returns at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, March 4th, according to Brendan Egan.

The mart manager reported a “firm” trade, despite numbers increasing on a week-by-week basis.

He noted that heifers peaked at €2.92/kg with up to €2.71/kg for bullocks.

“In the weanling rings, demand for the quality weanling heifers was very good with prices peaking at €3.37/kg.”

“There was a similar tone in the bull weanling ring with demand strongest for the €300 to €350 weanlings with prices peaking at €3.38/kg.”

“Breeding stock continues to be in demand with springers reaching €2,000 while top-quality dry to €1870. The suck calf trade is holding firm for the quality calves, but the plainer dairy Friesian-cross and Jersey-cross calves were a harder sell.” Egan added.
