Increased demand for breeding stock at Castlerea

Castlerea Mart report – cattle prices – 01-04-2021

Castlerea Mart’s weekly cattle sale, held on Thursday, April 1st, 2021, attracted some 700 entries, according to Brendan Egan.

The mart manager reported that prices held firm as “buyers continue to source stock despite the recent weather conditions”.

“Heifers were in strong demand again this week, while the weanling rings reported good clearances. Top-quality weanling exceeded €3.00/kg in both rings.”

“The dry cow trade is holding firm with €2.26/kg. Breeding stock continues to rise in price as increased interest was shown this week, while the calf trade was very strong also with prices reaching €440.” Egan added.

Some 180 entries went under the hammer at the mart’s bullock sale on Monday, March 29th, according to Egan.

He reported a “good” trade as lots made up to €2.76/kg or €1,010 over the weight.

  • AA – 505KGS – €1320;
  • AA – 560KGS – €1420;
  • CH – 635KGS – €1530;
  • CH – 600KGS – €1460;

Cattle prices last week

Farmers, exporters, and Northern demand drove the trade at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, March 25th, 2021, according to Brendan Egan.

The mart manager reported that the heifer ring saw prices peak at €3.03 a kilo, while the weanling rings reported good clearances as farmers were “anxious this week to source stock”.

“Numbers of stock presented for sale continue to grow as trade and prices are holding very strong again this week. The dry cow trade and breeding stock are also in strong demand while the calf trade was good for the quality lots.”
