Heavy stores for winter finishing a ‘very strong’ trade at Carnew

Carnew Mart – cattle prices – 30-10-2021

According to Eugene Clune, heifers met with a “very solid” trade at Carnew Mart on Saturday, October 30th, 2021.

He reported that “many farmers were around the ring for lighter stores, which led to top prices”.

Clune outlined that most heifers – half-Friesian-type stock – in the 350-450kg weight bracket sold for €2.00-€2.20/kg. Meanwhile, suckler-type heifers of this strength ranged from €2.40/€2.50.”

“Heavier stores ready for winter finishing met a very strong trade with €2.50/kg plus freely available for the right stock over 500kg.”

“Heavier heifers sold to a top price of €1,660 for a 720kg CH, with most of the heavier heifers selling between €2.20- €2.40/kg.”

Bullock prices:

Bullocks met a “very lively trade” with factory agents and northern customers alike “very active” for strong bullocks.

Clune reported that €2.50/kg was “freely available” at the mart’s general cattle sale.

“We recorded a top price on the day of €2,000 for 800kg Belgian-Blue-cross bullocks. 6 Limousin bullocks sold together weighing 660kg and made €1,690 or €2.56/kg. Quality store bullocks sold very well throughout.”

  • 444KG – CH – €1210;
  • 530KG – LM – €1290;
  • 500KG – CH – €1220.

Plainer store bullocks went under the hammer for €2/kg for the more Friesian-types to €2.25/kg for the lighter, plainer continental-types.

Cull cow prices

Meanwhile, just under 200 cull cows met with a “firm trade” at the Wicklow-based mart on Friday evening.

Clune reported that all “store Friesian cows direct from the parlour with no flesh sold from €1/kg to €200 over the weight”.

“Meanwhile, the heavier fleshed Friesian cows sold to €400 with the kg.” On the other hand, heavy continental cows met a “very steady trade”.
