Farmers and agents ‘very active to fill sheds of cattle types’ at Carnew

Carnew Mart report – cattle prices – 06-11-2021

According to David Quinn, just over 950 cattle were on offer at Carnew Mart on Saturday, November 6th, 2021.

The mart manager reported a “very lively trade for all classes”.

He said that “many farmers and agents were very active to fill sheds of all types of cattle”.

“Lighter, plainer half-Friesian-bred store sold from €1.90/kg to €2.20. The better-type continental type heifers ranged from €2.30/kg to €2.65/kg.”

Heifer prices:
  • 3 HEX – 500kg – €1000;
  • AAX – 540kg – €1140;
  • LM – 500kgs – €1,300;
  • CH – 600kgs – €1,400.
Bullock prices:  

Quinn pointed out that bullocks met with a “very strong” trade. Again, Friesian-bred stock made around the €2/kg mark.

“The good quality continentals meet a very strong trade with customers from all over very active for stock,” he added.

  • 2 FR – 713kg – €1480;
  • CH – 660kg – €1630;
  • LM – 600kgs – €1500;
  • CH – 774kgs – €1830;
  • LM – 735kgs – €1800;
  • AA – 760kg – €1680;
  • HEX – 522kg – €1240.
Suckler prices:

“Young cows calving in the next 3 months sold from €1350 to €1700. Older cows calving into the spring sold from €1100 to €1300.”

“Cows with soft calves sold from €1300 to €1560, while younger cows with quality calves at foot sold to €1850.”

Calve prices:

Quinn reported that some 180 calves were on offer. Continental bulls changed hands from between €300 and €450 and continental heifers pushed from €250 and €380.

Meanwhile, Hereford and Aberdeen-Angus bulls ranged from €190 and €280, while Hereford and Angus heifers varied from €160 and €270. Lastly Friesian bulls went under the hammer for prices between €70 and €180.

Cull cow prices:

Quinn reported that 220 cows met with a “good trade” on Friday, November 5th, 2021.

He explained that the mart recorded a full clearnace, with prices to €1,960 for heavy, continental cows.

  • Continental store cows: €820 – €1300 – €1.45-€2.16/kg;
  • Friesian beef cows: €1100 – €1520 – €1.50 – €1.72/kg;
  • Friesian store cows: €450 – €980 – €0.85-€1.55/kg.

  • 1 LM – 710 at €1540;
  • 2 LM – 722kg at €1460;
  • 1 PTX – 754kg at €1440;
  • 2LM – 660kg at €1280;
  • 1 PTX – 640kg at €1290;
  • 2 LM – 688kg at €1270;
  • 3 FR – 622kg at €880;
  • 1 FR – 908kg at €1530;
  • 2 FR – 788kg at €1260;
  • 3 FR – 480kg at €520;
  • 2 FR – 648kg at €740.
