A year without ag shows: Beidh Aonach Amárach returns to our screens

Beidh Aonach Amárach – which follows competitors going for glory at Ireland’s county shows and fair – will return to our screens later this week.

Throughout 2020 cameras and crews have been capturing the stories of people of all ages and backgrounds who vie for the top spots in a diverse range of competitions.

“Beidh Aonach Amárach has always been about people – their passions and talent. The shows may be gone in 2020 but let’s celebrate and share the skills, ingenuity, and innovation of the ‘best in show’.”

The series covers cattle to cakes, sheep-shearing to basket weaving, show-jumping to new technology, the best vegetables, dog agility, art, and craft.

“This is a lively, perceptive, and entertaining lightly formatted factual entertainment series about show-people – their remarkable personalities, talents, brains, rivalries, trade secrets, skills and stories.” a spokesperson said.

“We learn that showing be it animal or vegetable can be a family tradition – our families look at their long association with this world – where they won their first rosette, where in the world they have travelled to in their pursuit of the red ribbon, how they have progressed, or not as the case may be. We see family archives, photographs of their achievements.”

Edel & Brendan McCawley who are pedigree Angus farmers from Co. Leitrim and who compete every year at the agricultural shows, feature in episode one.

John & Eileen Gallagher, a couple from Donegal, who have been dancing with each other for more than 40 years also feature in the episode.

Meanwhile, there is a huge gap in show organiser Niamh Seoighe’s summer calendar, but she is keeping busy on the farm and in the local distillery.
