Cull cows to €2,890 and heifers to €2,670 at Balla Mart

According to Stephen Hannon, over 850 lots passed through its three rings at Balla Mart on Saturday, April 30^th, 2022.

The general manager of Aurivo Marts and manager of Balla Mart reported that some “quality” beef cattle came under the hammer at its weekly cattle sale, which it held in conjunction with its special end of month continental sale.

Hannon noted that heavy bullocks and cows were “very dear with some factory and northern buyers pushing things on making them dearer”.

He reported a “smashing” clearance in the bullock ring, with those 300kg to 400kg averaging €2.68/kg and stores in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket levelling at €2.66/kg.

Meanwhile, heavier bullocks 500kg+ averaged €2.82/kg with the tops to €3.10/kg-€3.25/kg.

A farmer from Balla had a Limousin bullock weighing 840kg that made €2,630 or €3.13/kg and another 785kg made €2,580 or 3.29/kg.

Heifer prices:

According to Hannon, nearly 300 lots were on offer in ring two. He noted that some “nice, quality” store animals met with a “good” clearance.

Heifers up to 400 kg averaged €2.62/kg and those in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €2.75/kg, and those 500kgs averaged €2.80/kg.

The top price in the ring, €2,670, came in the form of a May-2019-born 830kg entry and another 660kg LMX at €2,240.

Cull cow prices

According to Hannon, some 140 cull cows and 35 sucklers came under the hammer in the mart’s third ring. He noted that dry cow prices “ere up” due to the presence of some Northern Ireland online buyers.

The top price in this ring came in the form of a CH, 960kg, born in April 2018, at €2,890, while an in-calf cow with her heifer calf at foot topped out at €2,500.
