Report: Cull cows to €2,780 & bullocks to €2,640 in ‘buoyant ’ trade at Balla

Aurivo Balla Mart – Cattle Prices – 15-04-2023

According to Stephen Hannon, Aurivo Balla Mart played host to “another large” sale of cattle on Saturday, April 15^th, 2023.

The manager of Aurivo Balla Mart and general manager of Aurivo Marts reported that “prices remained buoyant for most types of cattle, especially stores, as farmers were out in force buying for the grass and the 7-month scheme”.

He outlined that prices reached €2,630 in the bullock ring, while heifers soared to €2,520, cull cows pushed to €2,780, and suckler pairs changed hands for up to €2,450.

Bullock prices

Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged 3.38p/kg, while those in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €3.20/kg, and heavier types 500kg averaged €3.21/kg.

According to Hannon, quality, heavy bullocks 700kg+ were “performing well” and made up to €1,800 with the weight, with tops of €2,630 for a 792kg Charolais-cross bullock.

Heifer prices

In ring two this week, approximately 300 heifers came under the hammer, with prices to €2,520 for a 590kg Limousin-cross heifer, born in May 2021.

Lots up to 400 kg averaged €3.00/kg, while heifers 400kg to 500kg levelled at €2.91/kg and 500kg entries stood at €2.96/kg of an average.

Meanwhile, in the suckler ring, an April-2018-born Charolais-cross cow with its bull calf at foot changed hands for €2,450 and a Charolais stock bull, which was born in 2019 and crossed the scales at 980kgs, sold for €2,300.
