VIDEO: Dry cows to €2,920, heifers to €3,000 & bullocks to €2,470 at Balla

Balla Mart – Cattle Prices – 03-12-2022

Prices rose to €3,000 in the heifer ring, dry cows hit €2,920, bullocks peaked at €2,470 and stock bulls topped out at €2,360 at Balla Mart’s most recent cattle sale yesterday (Saturday, Dec 3rd, 2022).

Stephen Hannon, general manager of Aurivo Marts and manager of Balla Mart, reported that “cattle remained very dear with some prices even better than last week”.

“Overall, there were exceptional prices for quality lots. It is hard to believe there are only two sales remaining until Christmas, and throughput is way up on previous years.”

“There was serious demand for cattle, and prices were described as unreal at times,” he added.

Bullock prices:

In the bullock ring, lots 300kg to 400kg averaged €2.51/kg, while stores levelled at €2.65/kg and those 500kg + sold for an average price of €2.68 p/kg.

According to Hannon, heavy bullocks 700kg+ were making over €1.700 over the kg due to northern, feedlot and online activity.

He noted that prices topped at €2,470 for a 775kg March-2020 entry in this ring, which eqautes to €3.19/kg or €1,695 over the kg.

The third ring was in operation for the cows this Saturday with just shy of 200 dry cows and circa 40 sucklers.

According to Hannon, dry cow prices improved due to the presence of Northern Irish online and factory buyers online.

• 350kg to 450kg averaged €2.67/kg;
• 450kg+ averaged €2.77/kg.

Heifer weanlings:

• 200 to 350kg averaged €3.18/kg;
• 350 to 450kg entries averaged €2.70/kg.
