Tuam Mart to hold charity auction in memory of auctioneers

Tuam Mart will host a charity auction, A Day for the Pats, in memory of two legendary livestock auctioneers next week.

The auction will take place in the Galway-based mart on Monday, December 6th, 2021, at 2pm.

Pat Devane passed after a short illness on May 28th, 2020, and Pat Dermody was killed in a farm accident on June 7th, 2020.

A day for the Pats

Marion Devane, manager of Tuam Co-operative Livestock Mart, told That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane:

“Both Pat Devane and Pat Dermody were keystone figures in the mart for more than 40 years.”

“In their memory, we have asked their families to select two charities of their choice. The charities they have chosen are Tuam Cancer Care and Cope Galway.”

“All proceeds collected will be split evenly between both charities. The auction will take place directly after the cattle sale at approximately 2 p.m. in ring 1.”

“The sale will also be live on the MartBids app, which will allow anyone to bid online. A host of fantastic items are up for auction, which local businesses have sponsored.”

Items for auction include:

  • A heifer from Tuam Mart;
  • Garth Brooks tickets;
  • Ireland VS Scotland rugby tickets;
  • Tickets for the hurling and football All-Ireland finals in 2022 with an overnight stay with bed and breakfast;
  • €1,000 travel voucher;
  • Animal feeds;
  • Dosing products;
  • Other items.
About chosen charities

Tuam Cancer Care’s aim is to support and assist people diagnosed with cancer, their families, and close friends from the time of diagnosis through treatment and afterwards.

Cope Galway’s vision is of a community where “every person is valued, cared for and supported at every stage of life”.

It provides support services for “people who are homeless, women and children experiencing domestic abuse and older people”.
